We do the opposite: every destination on this site is researched against the same six dimensions — cost of living, healthcare, safety, visa, climate, and English/expat presence — using public sources and on-the-ground reporting from long-term residents.
The result is a structured, comparable view of where your pension can actually go further — without giving up the things that matter as you age.
Every destination is scored on the same six dimensions: monthly cost-of-living budget (single and couple), healthcare quality (0-10), safety (0-10), retiree visa friendliness (0-10), climate type, and English/expat infrastructure. We use a transparent 50/30/20 budget rule — 50% rent and utilities, 30% food and transport and healthcare, 20% lifestyle — and verify each city's numbers against multiple sources.
Cost figures combine public cost-of-living indices, expat forums and direct quotes from local rental sites. Healthcare ratings consider WHO data, the JCI hospital list, and English-speaking clinic availability. Visa data is sourced from official government portals and refreshed at least quarterly.
Retire Destinations is an independent editorial project. Our editorial team includes long-term expats with direct experience in Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Thailand and Ecuador — supplemented by a global network of local contacts. Each destination is reviewed at minimum quarterly. Visa and tax information is checked against the relevant government portal on every review. Cost figures are refreshed against Numbeo, local listings and expat forum sentiment. The "Last reviewed" date on every destination page reflects the most recent update.
